Are you a classic car enthusiast, a restoration professional, or someone seeking a unique opportunity to own a prized piece of Pontiac history? Look no further! This 1969 Pontiac Firebird convertible is an outstanding restoration candidate, offering rarity, innovation, and classic style. Key Details: Year & Model: 1969 Pontiac Firebird Convertible Engine: OHC Inline-6 (175 hp) – A groundbreaking engine design by John DeLorean Transmission: Manual 3-Speed Column Shift Mileage: 32, 148 (presumed rollover) VIN: 22367U605656 Condition: Starts right up, runs well and is drivable with modest restoration required to be fully roadworthy. New Parts: BF Goodrich 70-Series Radial T/A Tires Starter Battery Fuel Pump Radiator (original radiator included – needs to be re-cored.) Clutch Brake Pads Carburetor Rebuilt Why This Firebird Is Special Convertible Rarity: Only 11, 657 Firebird convertibles were produced in 1969, a 30% decrease from 1968. Overall, Pontiac assembled and sold 16% fewer Firebirds in 1969 as compared to 1968. This makes 1969 Firebird convertibles more sought-after among collectors. Lastly, it is estimated that less than 3, 000 of the convertibles sold in 1969 were powered by Pontiac\'s highly innovative OHC 6, an engine that is becoming increasingly valued and sought after in today\'s market. To fully appreciate this car\'s \'cool factor, \' please view Jay Leno\'s Garage video, \"1968 Pontiac Firebird Sprint.\" Innovative OHC Inline-6 Engine: While most buyers intuitively seek a V8, the Pontiac OHC L6 is no ordinary engine. Designed by the legendary John DeLorean to power a roadster that could rival European sports cars, this was the world\'s first OHC engine to use a belt instead of a chain or gears...a now-standard design in the automotive world. Developed in partnership with U.S. Rubber, the new belt-driven OHC delivered a quieter, more reliable power unit capable of higher RPMs. Renowned for durability, Pontiac\'s OHC L6 is a nearly indestructible engine, initially boasting a redline of 6500 RPM. The base model of the L6 motor can be upgraded to a \"Sprint 6\" configuration via addition of a high-performance camshaft, stronger valve springs, a 4-barrel induction system, and a larger exhaust manifold or headers—affordable upgrades via readily available aftermarket parts. Restoration-Ready Condition: Car Body: Near perfect, with no rust or significant damage to the sheet metal. Unitized Body & Sub-Frame: Undercarriage is free from rust and in very good overall condition. Convertible Top Frame: Excellent condition, free of rust or deterioration and ready to accept new cover. Note that a convertible top frame in this condition is relatively rare amongst non-restored Pontiac F-body convertibles. \'Cocktail Shakers\' Intact: The four 55-lb spring-loaded, oil-filled shaker cans installed on Firebird convertibles to compensate for the lack of a hardtop remain with the car. These key structural components are sometimes missing as no aftermarket replacements are available. Storage History: The car has been warehoused and/or garaged since 1990, completely shielded from the elements for the last 34 years of its 55-year lifespan. Provenance: This Firebird represents the culmination of the first-generation Firebird, combining style, innovation, and performance. Perfect for Restoration This Firebird is an exceptional candidate for restoration—whether you dream of owning a stunning classic convertible or flipping it for profit. With its innovative engine, rarity, and strong foundation, this car offers immense potential. You can restore it to its original glory or take it to the next level by upgrading to a Sprint 6 configuration. Asking Price: $15, 500 OBO Priced competitively for its condition and rarity. Serious inquiries only, please. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a piece of Pontiac history and an extremely cool Firebird convertible that drives like a true roadster! Original 1969 Fisher Body Factory Service Manual

Prior to this, OHC’s were driven either by noisy, power-robbing gears or chains and were almost exclusive to racing engines. To achieve this major innovation, John DeLorean partnered closely with U.S. Rubber to create a fiberglass-reinforced, toothed timing belt strong enough to drive an overhead camshaft pushing oversized valves (intake valves are 1.92” in diameter) with double springs. The result was not only a more robust motor but one capable of significantly higher RPM’s than engines utilizing lifters and lacking the other stabilizing features of this motor. Pontiac offered two versions of this motor during model years 1966 to 1969 in Tempests, LeMans’ and Firebirds: a 175 hp base and a 215 hp “Sprint” configuration (1969 specifications.) Released during a period when consumers were obsessed with increasingly larger V8’s, the Pontiac OHC Six was truly ‘ahead of its time’ and production ceased in 1969. The rest of the automotive world had already taken notice, however and by 1972 carmakers ranging from Chevrolet to Citron, Peugeot to Porsche, and Ford to Ferrari had licensed or copied the Pontiac design and had released belt-driven SOHC and DOHC engines of their own. To learn more about the Pontiac ‘Fantastic Six’ engine and what makes it so special, please reference the excellent write up authored by Jim Black. Also, (though containing some factual errors such as the horsepower of the Base L6 motor, ) Jay Leno’s video \"1968 Pontiac Firebird Sprint\" is both informative and compelling. Collectability While there is great temptation to pop an LS-1 or other V8 in this vehicle, such a swap would only serve to decrease its value. This is due to the fact that the car is currently a 100% original version of a relatively rare combination of year, body style, and engine. The 1969’s are the most sought after of first generation Firebirds due to several factors, but primarily because of improved styling and the fact that nearly 20% fewer were produced than the prior year. As for convertibles, a full 30% fewer were produced in 1969 compared to 1968. At 11, 657 units, convertibles made up 13% of the Firebirds produced in 1969. Looking at power units, the Base-L6 comprised 18% of 1969 Firebird power units at 15, 477. Assuming the same engine distribution across convertibles, it can be estimated that only 2.4%

- or slightly more than 2, 000

- of Firebirds produced in 1969 were Base-L6 convertibles. The final factor to be considered in an estimation of this vehicle’s relative rarity is the fact that an over-arching tendency of second owners of these cars to pull the OHC 6 and replace it with a v8. In fact, a friend of mine and I did this very thing to a ‘67 LeMans: pulling and discarding the (now, highly sought after) 4-bbl Sprint 6 and replacing it with a run-of-the-mill 350 small block. The ‘survival rate’ of vintage, first-generation Firebirds is anyone’s guess. Based upon their own insurer data and other information including auction activity, Hagerty calculates 330K of cars produced in 1969 in the U.S. remain today. Based upon total production estimates of 8.7MM for that year, this represents a mere 4% survival rate. Of course, one must assume that vehicles which have become collectible such as a 1969 convertible Firebird have a significantly higher survival rate than, say a 1969 Ford LTD. Further, many such vehicles that are considered ‘gone, ’ might in fact be ‘hiding’ in a garage somewhere. Still, considering the very poor survivability of any convertible left in the weather for an extended period along with the relatively high percentage of first-gen Firebirds either wrecked or otherwise poorly modified by young, male second owners, it is likely no more than 20%

- or 400 – of this particular model/drive train combination remain in existence today. Of course, just because a care is rare does not necessarily translate into it being collectible. In this regard, other factors should be considered. First of all is the relative rarity of the OHC 6 motor, along with its place in automotive history. (It should be noted that avid car-collector Jay Leno considers his Sprint 6 Firebird to be one of his very favorite cars.) Second, is the fact that this unique motor sits inside a highly-desirable model, body style and year. Finally, one can reference a source such as AutoTrader Classics to see that even modified 1969 Firebirds with aftermarket spoilers, mag wheels, faux T/A trim packages, etc. are commanding prices in the $40-50K range when restored, with fully original, matching-number specimens going for even higher prices, topping out at $1MM for an all-original, fully restored 1969 Trans Am (given that any/all of the 8 original \'69 Trans Am convertibles produced are considered to be both unattainable and priceless.)
